This year to celebrate Valentine’s Day we asked the Spaeth team to share why they “heart” comms. Here are the results:
#7 You’re Punny…Trading puns is a favorite pastime in our household. One of my proudest moments was when my young son said, “You’re punny,” immediately after I had laid one of my puns on him. He not only got the pun, he got the context and I am pretty sure we have another word lover on our hands. –Emily, Executive Vice President
#6 Observing the World…I have always been amazed at some writers’ ability to provide readers with a vivid glimpse into “their world” simply by using words on a page. While the written word proves a powerful tool of communication, studying abroad in a country where I had to communicate in my second language increased my understanding of (and love for!) the way all types of communication work to expand our world and connect us with people from across the globe—communication ranging from words to tone of voice and body language. –Maddy, Intern
#5 Rhyme Time…Words are powerful, words are memorable and there is nothing more memorable than rhyming words. It’s why nursery rhymes are introduced to young children and why many rap verses are so powerful (Shout out to my fellow Beastie Boys fans!). Rhyming is one of the best ways to boost memory and we are in the memory business here at Spaeth. –Emily
#4 Stories are Magical…Since its Valentine’s Day and my wedding anniversary is two weeks away, I’m reminded of a story my husband told at our wedding reception. He was pulled over for speeding on the way to the church. When he tried to explain why, the police officer eyed him skeptically. He pulled out our marriage license and his tux (whew – did I mention how helpful props are too?!) and the officer laughed, “If you don’t want to go through with this, I can make sure you don’t have to!” Josh replied, “Yeah, but you haven’t met my bride. She wouldn’t be too happy with you OR me!” The officer let him go with a warning and our guests enjoyed a great laugh. –Laura, Vice President
#3 Math is Hard…I’m the rare individual who loves both math and literature, but we need communication to make sense of the world. Statistics are meaningless without context. One of my favorite communication examples is the classic story of lost packages over the holidays. While UPS and FedEx are both great companies, our longtime client FedEx has the upper hand in communications. UPS promised customers the delays affected “only a small percentage of people,” which didn’t matter if the package was yours! –Sally Ann, Director
#2 Powerful Memory Drivers…Laura’s wedding anniversary is two weeks after Valentine’s Day…and mine is two weeks before! Please indulge us in another wedding story; it is February after all. When my husband proposed, he said three, short, memorable statements (Headlines perhaps?). When we read our vows to each other, unplanned by either of us, I ended my vows with those statements and he began his vows with those statements. Many of our guests thought we had planned it! A special memory associated with words for us has now become part of the collective memory of those who attended our wedding. –Meaghan, Associate
#1 Word Play…If you follow Bimbo Banter you know about our love of word play. One of our favorite things is to come up with witty headlines for our blog posts, case-in-point, “Oh Kale No: The Dangers of Healthy Food.” Words matter, but they are also fun, which is why Word Play is number one. –Emily
