At the end of every year, the Spaeth team evaluates the winning BIMBO comments from each month and selects the best (worst) comment of the year (check out the 2019 BIMBO of the Year). This year, we want YOUR opinion on the year’s top blunder. Review the winning BIMBO comments of 2020 below and VOTE HERE. We will announce the winner in early 2021.

  1. “We did not lie,” insisted Iran’s government spokesman, Ali Rabiei, when it became clear that Iran’s Revolutionary Guard had indeed shot down Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752, as seen in the Jan./Feb. 2020 BIMBO Memo.
  2. “The debate’s a chance for us to make it clear that this is a deeply compassionate and principled man who isn’t just a rich guy on a vanity run,” said Tim O’Brien, a senior advisor to Michael Bloomberg’s presidential campaign before Bloomberg’s first debate in Las Vegas, as seen in the March 2020 BIMBO Memo.
  3. “The sky did not fall when these dispensaries opened their doors to medical patients five years ago. It didn’t fall two months ago when they began serving adult-use customers and it won’t fall if a responsible dispensary opens at 12 W. Maple later this year,” said Jeremy Unruh, co-founder and director of regulatory and public affairs at marijuana dispensary company PharmaCann, as seen in the April 2020 BIMBO Memo.
  4. Democratic Gov. Ed Rendell repeatedly said Trump is not to blame for the coronavirus pandemic, which created an implied BIMBO comment that, of course, Trump is to be blamed for the pandemic. But we agree with Rendell’s comment“The one thing people don’t want during a national emergency is political backbiting,” as seen in the May 2020 BIMBO Memo.
  5. “The truth will reveal this is not just another act of violent racism,” said Frank Hogue, attorney for Gregory McMichael, as seen in the June 2020 BIMBO Memo.
  6. “I don’t feel guilty about that,” said Missouri Gov. Mike Parson responding to a question about a record number of positive COVID-19 cases, as seen in the July 2020 BIMBO Memo.
  7. “I did not use power, wealth, or position to further that relationship,” said Former Chairman and CEO of Tapestry Inc. Jide Zeitlin, who resigned amid a board investigation into his romantic relationship with a woman 13 years prior, as seen in the August 2020 BIMBO Memo.
  8. “I can’t guarantee you that this policy has never been violated,” said Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos at a congressional hearing during which the leaders of Amazon, Facebook, Apple and Google faced criticism from lawmakers, as seen in the September 2020 BIMBO Memo.
  9. “This is not a cover-up,” said Police Chief La’Ron Singletary of the City of Rochester regarding the death of Daniel Prude while in police custody, as seen in the October 2020 BIMBO Memo.
  10. “Too black,” was how Stan Richards, legendary ad man behind the Richards Group, reacted to a proposed ad for long-time client Motel 6 on an internal Zoom call, adding it wouldn’t appeal to the lodging company’s “white supremacist constituents,” as seen in the November 2020 BIMBO Memo.
  11. “We’re not some demonic cult like we’re portrayed to be,” said Sen. Doug Jones, D-Ala., when commenting on his recent 20-point loss to Republican Tommy Tuberville, as seen in the December 2020 BIMBO Memo.

The BIMBO Memo is a reminder not to repeat and deny a negative word because of how the listener hears words. When you repeat and deny a negative word, the listener is likely to overlook the denial and hear the opposite of what the speaker is trying to say. It’s named for the young woman who was caught with a high profile, but alas married man. She held a press conference and announced, “I am not a BIMBO,” thus causing everyone to think she was.
